Leadership and Management – Differences
Goals and objectives of the organizations are achieved through concerted coordination of various important functions of management. These functions include planning, organizing, leading, and controlling (Robbins & DeCenzo, 2001). A leader generally deals with the interpersonal aspects of a manager’s job. According to current concepts, leadership is more associated with change, inspiration, motivation, and influence (Dubrin, 1998). When we analyze various activities carried out within an organization, we find a lot of differences between the roles played by the leadership and the management. For example, in establishing directions, leadership develops vision and strategies whereas management establishes detailed steps and timetables for achieving needed results along with allocating resources. With regard to developing network for achieving the goals, leadership involves aligning people, and creating teams and coalitions. The management for achieving the agendas, establishes structure, staffs, and develops policies and procedures to guide people.
In the execution phase of any assignment, leadership motivates, and energizes people to overcome major political, bureaucratic, and resource barriers. The management performs control function like monitoring of results against plans. Another difference between leadership and management is that the leaders often bring changes to a dramatic degree. Leaders have the potential of producing extremely useful changes like launching of new products. The management on the other end tends to be predictable by maintaining the status quo.
When comparing, a leader and a manager may have different roles and approaches but while remaining in an organization, both can not afford to move in divergent axes. They have to conform to the attainment of organizational goals and objectives. Methods may be different but the strategic targets will however remain the same.
