Mission statements are important to every organization. It is where the company or organization’s purpose of existence is stated. It describes what the company or organization does and for whom its services are (Zahorsky) . Having a mission statement is significant because it gives perspective with regard to the organization’s existence. It somehow gives the scope and limitation of the company or organization. It also states its values and what it believes in.

There are numerous human services organizations worldwide. Their presence is proving to be significant. They help individuals and communities improve their way of life by the help of other individuals and agencies that are interested in public service. A lot of these organizations exist with their own reasons but the one thing that they have in common is that they help others who are in need. They can specialize in a lot of areas like health care or providing opportunities, or volunteerism. This makes it important to have a mission statement because it provides the organization to opportunity to establish what they are, what they do, and who they are working for. Without it, people who would come across their organization can have a difficult time analyzing their purpose. The mission statement also gives them the opportunity to make boundaries with regard to their purpose.

National Human Services Assembly states its mission as “to engage leaders of the national non-profit health and human service sector in collective efforts to advance the effectiveness of health and human services in the United States” (www.nassembly.org). This can be considered as a good mission statement. It is simple, easy to remember, and reflects its purpose clearly. The mission statement obviously says what it wants to achieve, as well as its reason. It does not go into specifics with regard to its goals but it is still a good mission statement. The organization collaborates the nation’s non-profit establishments to aid the progress of communities, families, and individuals. These non-profit establishments include the health and human service sectors.

The National Organization for Human Services mission statement is: “by the year 2010, NOHS will approach its vision by increasing professional development opportunities, completing and implementing the credentialing plan, increasing external communications, increasing internal communications, developing a public policy process and agenda, and maintaining financial stability” (www.nationalhumanservices.org). Although the statement is clear, it can be considered too specific. It also based its objectives from the vision statement. It also does not indicate the reason for its existence and for whom it is existing for. It is merely an objective statement on how and when to achieve its goals. It does not indicate how it intends to perform its activities and who will benefit from it.

Another human service organization is the American Public Human Services Association. Its mission statement says that “the American Public Human Services Association, founded in 1930, is a non-profit, bipartisan organization of state and local human service agencies and individuals who work in or are interested in public human service programs. Our  mission is to develop and promote policies and practices that improve the health and well-being of families, children, and adults. We educate Congress, the media, and the general public on social policies and practices and help state and local public human service agencies achieve their desired outcomes in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, child care, child support, Medicaid, food stamps, child welfare, and other program areas and issues that affect families, the elderly, and people who are economically disadvantaged (www.aphsa.org).” This can be considered as a good mission statement. It is clear on what it wants to achieve, for whom it is existing for, and why it is existing. It involves the help of agencies and persons who want to participate in public human service. It also educates and help other public human service organizations. When compared to the mission statement of National Organization for Human Services, it is seen that they can be both long and specific. However, when analyzed closely, the specifics given by the American Public Human Services Association make more sense than that of National Organization for Human Services.

At times, people get confused in what to write in their statements. They think that they have to have fancy words or make the statement complicated by putting too much information in it. As a result, it becomes too difficult for the readers to understand and the significance of having a mission statement is lost. Organizations or companies should always be aware of what they want to say to their audience, as well as how they want to present themselves. The length of the statement and neither is the utilization of complicated language is important in creating a mission statement. As long as it indicates its role, definition of the organization, its competency, and future plans, it can never go wrong no matter how simple or short it is.

In any way, however one looks at mission statements, understanding the information it imparts will always depend on who reads it. It can be a one-liner statement or it can be a paragraph long but if an individual can relate to what it says then the mission statement serves its purpose. It will always help if the statements meet the criteria of a good mission statement because in that way, readers will not be confused as to what it wants to say. Organizations or companies need to have a mission statement because this is where individuals can find a description of what they are in a very concise way. If the organization or the company can not provide a short mission statement, they should keep in mind that they have to write in a very specific way in contrast to using broad and common terms, the example being that of National Organization for Human Services. When an organization or a company writes a statement that is too common, it will not have a distinguishing factor from other organizations or companies, especially those that they will have competition with. As well, for it to be very effective, the statement should be understood by every one involved in the company or organization. It will be useless to have a mission statement and not understand what it says. The employees or volunteers should relate what they are doing to the statement so as to better understand their work. With these things being said, it is also important to indicate that it is not only having a great mission statement that is vital in the company or organization. The execution of this statement plays a significant role in the company or organization’s existence. Reaching the company or organization’s goals should always coincide with its mission statement. It should not be enough that it is making large amounts of profits because the significance of the mission statement and what is written in it will be lost, and people involved will have a hard time finding the meaning of what they are doing.
